For a really long time, I thought that being an introvert meant I wasn’t going to see the success others were experiencing in entrepreneurship.
I believed that you had to be an extrovert to market and sell yourself successfully.
Where did that idea come from?
Well, I spent over a decade in the corporate world. I watched people with more extroverted, outgoing personalities grabbing the attention of the CEO. And I quickly got the idea that those extroverted behaviors were the general managers’ idea of success because at every review meeting I was told to speak up and be more active in group settings.
It’s true – I was always the person behind the scenes. But I was leading by pushing my team forward from behind. I was content there but I also believed that the success of my team was evidence of my success as a leader. But still – those reviews and the praise my extroverted colleagues were receiving was getting in my head.
As an Introvert Coach, I work with women every day who are experiencing the same limiting belief – that success is not as likely unless you replicate extrovert-type behaviors in your business. And I think it’s because we have all heard the labels, the popular opinions, and the well-intentioned advice SO many times over the course of our lives that we start to believe it.
All you have to do is come out of your shell…
If you’d just quit living in your head so much…
It would be better if you’d contribute more…
Just get out there and be more social…
But I’m here to tell you that this is flawed thinking.
If you accept this, you’re not taking into account all the incredible strengths introverts possess, and how those strengths lend themselves to entrepreneurship.
I’m going to prove this to you.
Take a moment and write down 10 things that are YOUR strengths.
In business, these strengths are your superpowers. And you can learn to harness them to build systems and processes that are different from the norm. This will lead you to a level of success you used to reserve in your mind for extroverts!
My superpower is connecting with people. I’ve built the greater part of my community through authentic message-based conversations on social media. But I don’t do this in the common extroverted way anymore. I don’t follow a strategic lead generation sales conversation – taking someone from “hello” through a prescribed script towards the sale. No, I feel stronger and more authentic if I’m being real. I have learned to follow my natural curiosity about a person’s story. And this has served me so much better than any extroverted strategy I’ve ever tried.
In fact, just about the moment I let go of doing things the way people were telling me to do them my business started to grow! People were coming to ME and asking how they could work with me! I was having real and honest and true connections with people, which was what filled me up as an introvert in the first place.
Reject the traditional rules of entrepreneurship if they are not resonating with you. Instead, find ways to adjust your marketing and selling techniques to align with your strengths.
And take it from my experience – when you start focusing on the things that make you strong, you’ll feel aligned and your superpowers will take you to the success you’ve been desiring!
